Many Pioneer OWWL Libraries will be closed October 24 –26 for Catalog Upgrade

On October 24, 25 and 26, many Pioneer Library System OWWL libraries will be closed due to a server upgrade for the OWWL catalog at Pioneer Library System headquarters in Canandaigua.

During the upgrade, library users will not be able to connect to the OWWL catalog via owwl.org to place holds or check their accounts. Wi-fi service and access to full text databases will also be unavailable, as these services interact with OWWL borrower card files.

Many area libraries will spend this down-time catching up on in-house cleaning and maintenance tasks, as well as sending staff to specialized training workshops conducted at the Pioneer Library System office.

Jennifer Morris, Executive Director for Pioneer Library System states, “We have been meeting with Pioneer Library System member libraries over the past few months to work out plans for the upgrade. Our initial hope was the upgrade could be done over a holiday weekend, but it would be cost-prohibitive for the vendor to provide weekend staffing and troubleshooting in case something were to go wrong during the migration of our data.”

The upgrade will result in cost containment for Pioneer Library System and its OWWL members. The current OWWL catalog runs on a proprietary computer server platform. By moving to an established open-source platform, Pioneer and its members will be able to save money in server support, operating and equipment costs.

Only the following public libraries in Wyoming County will be open during the upgrade:

Gainesville Public Library (Silver Springs), Pike Library, and the Wyoming Free Library will maintain full services including circulation. These libraries are in the process of migrating to OWWL and will be utilizing their local catalogs.

The other public libraries in Wyoming County will be closed: Arcade Free Library, Cordelia A. Greene (Castile), Eagle Free Library (Bliss), Perry Public Library, Stevens Memorial Community Library (Attica), and Warsaw Public Library.

  • We will be closed Wednesday October 24th through Friday the 26th so that Pioneer Library System can upgrade the OWWL system. No materials will be due on the closed days. This closing is necessary and will allow cost savings in the future.
